Nicola Randone was the guitarist/vocalist with the now-disbanded Grey Owl, who struck out on his own in 2002 (bringing along some pieces he composed while with Grey Owl) to record and release Morte Di Un Amore. Riccardo Cascone (ex-Grey Owl) contributed bass, Enrico Boncoragio drums and percussion, and Giovanni Bulbo contributed keyboards, which includes some beautiful piano (or piano-like) accents. Morte Di Un Amore (A Love's Death) could loosely be called a concept album, in that there each piece touches upon similar, broadly drawn themes – loneliness, despair, fatalism, and tragic love. Well, with a song title like "Il Pentimento Di Dio… Dopo La Fine Del Mondo" (God's Repentance After The End Of The World), you know not to expect something optimistically upbeat. This fatalism – the "woe is me" factor – is what characterized many of the Romantic poets of the early 19th Century, namely John Keats. Without diverging into an essay on Keats and the other romantics, I'll just say that Keats ruminated often on death, including his own, which he knew was coming -- Keats died in 1821, at the age 25, of tuberculosis [...] read full review !!!
Its no secret that Italian bands tend
to have a special little extra artistry and musicianship that I just
love in the context of prog, and I don't mean only the classics like
PFM, Le Orme or the absolute masters, known for short as BANCO. Check
out the latest output by DFA, Deus Ex Machina or La Torre dellAlchimista
to see that the tradition of excellence is still strong. Don't get me wrong. The music offered here is a very good collection of prog-flavored pop ballads and AOR soft rockers, featuring the excellent vocal prowess of Nicola Randone. This guy can really sing, delivering with emotion and intensity that makes him sound like a mix of Fish and Le Ormes Aldo Tagliapietra, and all the tunes he chose are tasty and well crafted. Melodic, spacious and austere in all the right places, this is music where every instrument provides vocal support, and is yet allowed to breathe and move on its own, like the very tasty guitar solos peppered through the album that have that distinctly Rotherian mix of bittersweet beauty and anger. There are many other hints of classic English prog instrumentation on this album. For example, the opening track Visioni features a keyboard lead sound and vibe that are identical to those found on the Floydian opus Dogs, and the intro arpeggio to La Giostra is an instant reference to Alan Parsons Tales Of Mystery and Imagination. Moreover, like in most of the work by both of these bands, many of the songs are interconnected by strange ambient holophonics (heartbeats, radios tuning and thunderclaps), lending continuity to the whole album. I could go on, but you get the idea. The production is immaculate, and overall this is a very professional piece of work. Obviously this isn't going to please diehard Magma fans, but people who dig sweet'n'happy neoprog of the kind served by Pendragon or Glass Hammer, are likely to really enjoy this release. If you're interested in getting it here in the USA, I'd suggest getting in touch with Kinesis. I don't get commission, and I'm sure the other prog pushers probably have it, but I just remember seeing it on the Kinesis catalogue.

I brani
I
temi toccati spaziano dalla denuncia sociale, all'anticlericalismo
very beautiful debut album from sicilian singer and composer Nicola
Randone. Many years have been going since he played with metal band
Grey Owl and it's clear listening to "Morte di un amore".
[...] Morte Di Un Amore (Death Of A Loved One) by Nicola Randone manages to cross quite a few musical boundaries within a superbly produced album. There is a tinge of melancholy within most of the themes of the album, which are not necessarily progressive but verge into the well-crafted pop/AOR musical scene. Nevertheless, this is one of the more interesting albums I have come across this year. [...] The album opens with Visioni (Visions), a mainly instrumental piece which immediately showcases Randone's powerful vocals amidst a sequence of synthesiser sounds much in the Tangerine Dream vein. [...] An impressive album with some great arrangements, Nicola Randone has come up trumps and hopefully he will get the recognition that he deserves with this album and hopefully manage to break through with a record label deal. Try this album, you won't be disappointed [...]

Randone tuntuu pyörivän omissa kuvioissaan tehden omaa musiikkiaan apinoimatta vanhoja suuruuksia, kuten turhan useilla progeartisteilla nykyisin on tapana. Albumi on piristävä poikkeus nykyisten melko tasapaksujen progejulkaisujen joukossa.

Randone - Morte di un amore [...]Randone has a very expressive voice, as many Italian singers do. Some people might even say he is overdoing it a bit, but to me it seems honest enough: he simply finds it hard to contain his emotions [....] La Giostra is in my opinion the best song on the album and it is also likely enough the most varied one: spoken voices (in this case mainly Hitler's, lots of lyrics, a beautiful chorus, the song has both dark as well as more orchestral dimensions and even mars rhythms. The ending is surprisingly folky [...] A surprisingly mature effort in which Randone shows to have an identity of his own.

acustica in evidenza come l'ottima "Tutte le mie stelle";

Insomma, dovendo

arrangiamenti sempre molto curati e spesso complessi.
[...] I thought it was already impossible to create something really new within the framework of a theatrically dramatic kind of Symphonic Progressive pioneered by Genesis - however, Nicola Randone's debut album, "Morte di un amore", represents, IMHO, nothing else but a truly new manifestation of that genre. (The die-hard fans of early Genesis and any sorts of the classic Genesis sound may stop reading this review, - Randone's music is by no means your cup of tea.) This music is truly unique, so it cannot be compared to anything existing under a 'sun' of Symphonic Progressive. Symphonic Art-Rock, presented on "Morte di un amore", is for the most part lushly and very effectively orchestrated. [...] Most of those who are used to value any albums by the contents of the first two or three songs on them (i.e. straight in a store) should be enough charmed with "Morte di un amore" to purchase it immediately. (It doesn't much matter that they'll most likely be very disappointed with the album as a whole. Often, such people are quite happy 'having' on a disc at least a couple of songs they like.) Which would be useful for Randone's further creation. It's not only because of all five of the remaining songs on the album, among which the 15-minute title track is more than a mere prog killer, are real masterpieces. Also, in the presence of a proper promotion and distribution, "Morte di un amore" may become an album that can really help Progressive to get back the mainstream status, at least partly [...]
NICOLA
NICOLA
RANDONE Nicola Randone, from Ragusa (Sicily, Italy), moved his first artistic steps with the prog band named Grey Owl and "Morte Di Un Amore" ("A Love’s Death") is his debut as solist and it is an ambitious, poetic, well played and arranged album featuring very interesting words (you can find their English translation in the below mentioned site) and a wide spectrum of sounds and influences dominated by the strong personality of this Italian singer. Apart the quasi reggae "Il Pentimento Di Dio", the remaining eight songs are devoted to the Italian progressive school of the ‘70s embracing Le Orme, La Locanda Delle Fate, early Alan Sorrenti and Franco Battiato, with a peculiar symphonic emphasis in the arrangements compelled to support the mighty and passionate voice of Nicola who sings his bitterness with not banal words and thoughts. The result of two years hard work fits perfectly with nowaday reality and it's really difficult to make a track-by-track review because "Morte Di Un Amore" is almost a concept as must be considered as one body, a little like "Abraham" by Quasar Lux Symphoniae (another great Italian band of the ‘90s). I hope that people not of Italian language don’t avoid this album only for this linguistic reasons because there’s great music waiting for them here, there’s melody, symphonic prog, a little touch of rock but creativity in abundance.
Nicola Randone is one of many Italian musicians with a lot of experience. After some harder work with Sicilian Grey Owl he has created a new standard with 'Morte di un amore'. [...] It's always difficult to be inventive and original in the music business, but Nicola has at least proven with this album that progressive music is not necessarily a-commercial [...] The first track 'Visioni' is a perfect illustration of the talents of Nicola: a melodious and symphonic introduction with powerful but emotional vocals, accompanied by a romantic sounding piano, gradually changing into progressive synthesiser sounds with many special effects. Many influences are going through my mind, and yet it's impossible to put a name on it, or should I say it's 'Randone'? [...] A melodic introduction with recordings of World War II (Hitler) on La Giostra feels like having a message. But honestly, my knowledge of Italian is very poor, so I was happy to have the translations of the lyrics directly from Nicola. And then you discover that those lyrics are very poetical, sometimes religiously inspired but you could expect that from an Italian. The madness of war is well described in 'La Giostra' and especially the atrocities of Aushwitz [... ] The title track 'Morte di Un Amore' is an epic song, a masterpiece that will be appreciated by every progressive fan. Pure Italian rock, with some heavy guitars, excellent vocals. Again some gothic influences, I could enumerate a few bands, but this cd is really very original [...]
Morte di un Amore is the debut solo album by Italian musician Nicola Randone. Italian musicians are well known for their progressive output and some are more innovative than others. Morte di un Amore (a Loves Death) is something quite different again. The best way I can describe the style is to call it progressive opera but even that is not entirely accurate. However, Nicolas strong vocals are definitely operatic/theatrical in nature and feature prominently in the mix. I suspect he is a fan of Pink Floyd purely because I detect a number of sounds here and there that are similar to those used by Floyd for their Wish You Were Here and Animals albums [...] To appreciate this album it should be listened to in its entirety, as I am sure it is meant to be. The compositions are more complex than they initially seem and the changing textures and styles are very interesting [...]
[...] The first thing that every listener will notice about Nicola's music is his voice. He is one of the best Italian rock singers I've heard, and he proves it 30-second into the first track. His instantly likeable voice is somewhat pop-oriented ala Eros Ramazotti, yet it's so rich with melody, feeling, and expression that prog fans will instantly dig it. There is a noticeable theatrical and cabaret influence in the vocals that will especially impress fans of Italian and French prog. [...] Well, Nicola proves that some young people are interested in continuing the Italian vocal tradition at the highest quality. Instrumentally speaking, Nicola seems to prefer a grandiose symphonic sound that allows his voice to soar. Modern keyboards take care of the symphonic sounds, while acoustic guitar strumming lies deep in the mix [...]I rate this CD one of the top releases this year, and especially recommend it to fans of Italian progressive rock [...]
Nicola Randone presents a beautifully progressive rock with an existentialist feeling. Having already being around the prog and metal scene with Sicily-based Grey Owl, Nicola Randone emerges now with this epic, brain-feeding monsterpiece. To him, going solo meant complete artistic control and a license to experiment. The result is astonishing. In Morte di un amore (A Love's Death), his rather poetical debut album, Nico(la) shows an incredible vocal range and style. He uses distinctive tecniques to decorate each performance. A proof? Listen to the vocal pyrotechnics in the inspiring "L'Infinito" (play it loud!) or in the exquisitely heart-wrenching "Un cieco" [...]
Nicola
Randone is an Italian artist performing progressive music. The songs
are sung in his native language. Lyrics are an important part of getting
the 'big picture' where progressive music is concerned. Thankfully,
Nicola provided me with English translations of the lyrics. I won't
go into the details, except to say that they are thought provoking and
far from being the 'throw away bubble gum' lyrics most rock fans will
be used to.
Nicola Randone is a talented italian musician. His first album is titled "Morte di un amore" and is distributed by BTF. Randone's music comes down from the heart of Sicily, but his influences are deeply settled into italian progressive rock of the Seventies: Alan Sorrenti is the first name that comes to mind when listening to Randone's album, as well as Claudio Rocchi, Orme's Aldo Tagliapietra or Locanda delle Fate. The intriguing "Morte di un amore" is a good italian rock work, suited for all italian prog music fans. The nice booklet includes all lyrics.
Nicola
Randone's brand of progressive rock is more song based which he fuses
other music styles to give a different flavor. All in all a very nice collection of beautiful songs are found on this CD. Ron

Out of Italy comes multi-instrumentalist Nicola Randone, who just released his first solo-CD. He did everything on his own and I must say at times it sounds quite impressive. The lyrics are in Italian, so not everyone will understand what Nicola is saying. The music is hard to define, because there are elements of AOR, Pop, Prog and Sympho used. Although the music is very soft in it's approach, the quality of the songs is stunning, because they are from a very high level. Still I had rather heard some more guitar and a heavier drumsound, but nevertheless I enjoyed listening to such great semi AOR ballads like "L'infinito", "Un cieco", "La giostra" and "Amore Bianco". The production is crystal clear, and the vocal performance is very good, but the album is not for the rockers out there, only recommended if you're into a softer AOR/Pop/Prog type of style and don't mind the Italian language… More info at: http://www.nicolarandone.it and e-mail him at: [email protected] (Points: 7.5 out of 10)
Nicola
Randone is a highly talented progressive music artist, and this CD is
perfect proof of it. You noticed that I wrote "progressive music"
instead of "rock", right? There are a lot of rock elements
here, but to call this album a "progressive rock" album wouldn't
be justified.
